The
Sopranos Family Cookbook: As Compiled by Artie Bucco by Allen Rucker,
Michele Scicolone
In what is quite possibly the most fun of all the Sopranos-themed
titles being published is tongue-in-cheek cookbook brings
homestyle Soprano family cooking to the table. Artie Bucco, the
character (played by John Ventimiglia) who is the chef at the
show's Vesuvio restaurant, sets the tone of this book of insider
"family" secrets. Natalie del Greco offers recipes
for a simple Marinara Sauce as well as a Sunday Gravy. In a
chapter entitled "The Soprano Family Tradition," Bucco
listens as Corrado Soprano Jr., or Uncle Jun', reminisces about
Newark's Little Italy while whetting his appetite with thoughts of
Pasta Fagiole and Panzerotti. The recipes, by Scicolone (Italian
Holiday Cooking), are solid and honest-to-goodness
Italian-American dishes. Even the godfather himself, Tony Soprano,
lectures on the art of the grill (fans will remember his BBQ panic
attack). In the end, readers are left with a book-filled with
stills from Soprano episodes-that is alternately enticing and
wonderfully tacky, just like the Soprano family members
themselves. Frank Pellegrino, co-owner Rao's Restaurant and author of
Rao's Cookbook "...a wonderful cookbook...simple, well
done, and easy to make...this book deserves its own Emmy!"

that has an audience of over 100,000 analyzes the psyche of the
mob family. Despite its lack of revelatory information (e.g., most
viewers have probably already picked up on Tony's split
personality), loyal fans will snatch this up.

The
Sopranos: Selected Scripts from Three Seasons by David Chase
(Creator), Soprano Productions Inc., Home Box Office For
rabid Sopranos fans and would-be screenwriters, this is a no-brainer-but
even for the rest of the mildly interested public, these scripts
make worthwhile reading. Series creator Chase's introduction
describes the writing process and illuminates some of the themes
present in each season. The pilot episode (which opens in Dr.
Melfi's waiting room); "College," in which Tony and
Meadow visit Bates College and mayhem ensues; "The Happy
Wanderer"in which "Parvati" (Janice) sows seeds of
serious family discontent; "The Knight in White Satin
Armor" which has Richie getting offed in an unexpected
manner; and "Pine Barrens," in which a
"package" awaiting burial hits Christopher with a shovel
and disappears, are all featured within. Individual authors and
directors are credited script by script, and the lists of casts
and settings makes this book workable for productions, though some
scenes are omitted. One can imagine thousands of amateur
productions mounted in improvised Ba-Da-Bing!s around the country.

with obsessive attention to detail. It's all in here: the food,
the music, the dreams, the visits to the psychiatrist, the snappy

stand-alone essays about the series. This is the only completely
up-to-date program guide, covering the first three seasons of this
immensely popular and award-winning show.
Who's
Sorry Now: The True Story of a Stand-Up Guy by Joe Pantoliano,
David Evanier Sopranos actor Pantoliano, who plays the
belligerent and misogynistic Ralph Cifaretto, enters the celebrity
memoir arena with a jovial account of his 1950s and '60s youth in
Hoboken and Fort Lee, N.J. In addition to his familiar Sopranos
role, Pantoliano has appeared in over 60 movies, including Memento
and The Fugitive, and will make his directorial debut with the
upcoming "Just Like Mona." But he saves his
career for future volumes, instead concentrating here on his
eccentric Italian-American family and the stormy relationship and
"shared misery" of his parents, Mommy and Monk. Equal
space goes to his relatives, girlfriends and childhood "pals
in the projects," a gang of "piss-ant
grade-schoolers" who broke into railroad cars to steal
whatever they found. Young Joey's grades suffered, and by junior
high, he lived in a "dyslexic bubble," but wound up
righting himself by acting in school plays, eventually moving to
regional theater and, finally, Hollywood. "Joey Pants"
writes with energy, humor and honesty, and his passionate closing
chapter, with Joey attempting to break away from his clinging,
cursing Mommy to become a big-time actor, is the icing on the
cake.

This
Thing of Ours
by David Lavery
(Editor) The Sopranos is the "richest and most
compelling piece of television no, of popular culture that I've
encountered in the past twenty years... [it's a] meditation on the
nature of morality, the possibility of redemption, and the legacy
of Freud," writes critic Ellen Willis in This Thing of Ours:
Investigating The Sopranos. Edited by David Lavery, the book
collects 18 essays by academics covering a range of subjects, such
as the conflicting roles of men and women, obesity, "Old
Jersey" versus "Nouveau Jersey," food, music and
more. The essays are at once entertaining and serious pieces of
social criticism.

Tony
Soprano's America: The Criminal Side of the American Dream by David R. Simon
Tony Soprano lives the epitome of a double life: one minute he's
grilling hamburgers with his family, the next he's holding a gun
to somebody's head in a dark alley. Criminologist David Simon
examines Tony's contradictory persona in Tony Soprano's America:
The Criminal Side of the American Dream. According to Simon, The
Sopranos taps into a core condition that many people deal with:
can a respectable member of society also engage in criminal
behavior? Can an upstanding citizen dishonor his or her parents?
Simon poses probing questions, about the Sopranos and the real
life version, that deal with morality, heroes, corruption, family
life, violence and more.

The
Sopranos: A Family History
by Allen Rucker
A stellar
examination of the past, present, and portents of "The
Sopranos." From the die-hard Soprano fans to all
those interested schlubs, this book is the must-read needed on
their bookshelf. An entertaining, voyeuristic, and compassionate
look at the Sopranos' lives that mix reality and myth into a
remarkable anthology of today's most famous mobster family. The
book compliments the show with its photos and commentary on what
will become the most talked about series for years to come.
Rucker brings an unique standpoint to the Sopranos' family and
lifestyle that I never knew existed. I hope he writes the next
updated version! If not, "I have friends, you know!"
Published to coincide with the debut of the highly anticipated
fourth season of the HBO series, The Gospel According to Tony
Soprano is a fascinating book that looks through the violence
and drama to the deeper moral issues. Spiritual teacher and writer
Chris Seay analyzes the characters and their all-too-human
behaviors, and helps us evaluate our own humanity, and ultimately
our relationship with God.
